Where is the appendix?

The appendix (technical name, vermiform appendix) is located in the abdominal region (see diagram below). It is located in humans near the junction of the small and large intestines.

The appendix is vestigial in humans, which means that it currently serves no apparent function, although it may have in the distant past. It is still possible that the appendix may serve a secondary or tertiary function, however, as new analyses in the scientific community suggest that it may in fact have a purpose after all, perhaps relating to the endocrine or immune systems.
