Can You Catch Swine Flu from Pork?
With the recent epidemic of swine flu causing such a stir in the news world these days, it is hard to tell rumor from fact. Something that has been coming up recently is the theory that swine flu is being spread from store-bought processed pork. The evidence for this seems to be along two lines: common sense and hysteria. It seems to make perfect sense that if you eat meat from a diseased animal then you yourself will be vulnerable to contract the disease. However flu is different from diseases that spread in this manner and that it cannot survive without a living host. Essentially it is not able to survive in processed meat. The other line of thinking is that swine flu is related to mad cow disease and can somehow be transferred via ground pork. Experts say that this is definitely not true. Even with the swine flu on the rise pork is still a safe product to purchase.
