iPhone 4 Full, Detailed Specs

Here we'll cover the major features, but also go over some of the smaller improvements and changes as well.

First, the hardware. The iPhone 4 has glass on the front and back of the phone, and the sides are made of stainless steel. No plastic here, this is a classy piece of hardware. In comparison, most other smartphones are made primarily out of plastic, which scratches easily and also feels somewhat cheap.

The iPhone 4 is still GSM-only, and in the United States, it is still officially shackled to AT&T. In perhaps an ironic twist, the phone now has built-in support for video chat using the front-mounted or the second rear-mounted camera, however AT&T's network apparently can't handle the data throughput so if you want to use it you will have to be connected to WiFi which pretty much defeats the purpose.

There is some hope, though, that the iPhone 4 will come to Verizon Wireless in the United States.

The iPhone 4 also includes the latest version of iPhone OS, version 4.0, now renamed to be iOS 4.0. The main features here are multi-tasking support and support for video game badges and medals that you can share online through something called Game Center. Also, you can now organize your App icons into categories.

The new iPhone also now supports HD video recording and even video editing through a $5 version of iMovie that will be available on the App Store. The device is a bit slimmer and a bit lighter than the previous iPhone 3GS.

The new "retina" display has the following specs:

- 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen Multi-Touch display
- 960-by-640-pixel resolution at 326 ppi
- 800:1 contrast ratio (typical)

Apple claims the pixel density is higher than can be perceived by the human eye, hence the name. This may be marketing hyperbole, but it is very high-res.

Under the hood, the iPhone 4 also supports the new A4 processor (similar to the one in the iPad) and so is somewhat faster than the iPhone 3GS.

The iPhone 4 also includes a number of sensors, including one new one, a 3-axis gyroscopic sensor for sensing orientation of the phone:

- Three-axis gyro
- Accelerometer
- Proximity sensor
- Ambient light sensor

The iPhone 4 also includes a larger battery and slightly longer battery life (6 hours of 3G browsing claimed).
