When Was Arthroscopic Surgery Developed?

Prof. Kenji Takagi in Tokyo has traditionally been credited for performing the maiden arthroscopic examination of the knee joint of a patient in 1919. Recently it has been discovered that the Danish physician Severin Nordentoft reported on arthroscopies of the knee joint as early as 1912 at the Proceedings of the 41st Congress of the German Society of Surgeons at Berlin. Arthroscopic surgery or arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure in which an examination of damage of the interior of a joint is performed.
