The cost of living in the United States varies widely depending on the state and city. Various factors such as costs involved with food, shelter, clothing and lifestyle are used to create a cost of living index, the national average being 100. Hawaii and the West coast are amongst the most expensive areas to live with some cities 60% to 90% over the national average of 100. Many southern states have the lowest cost of living rankings. The cost of living in the New England states is above average.
