Afghanite minerals are extremely rare and not sold under normal circumstances. It comes in a range of color from baby blue to a deep teal blue. As indicated by its name, afghanite was originally found in Afghanistan. In the US, it is primarily mined in New York. It is an unusual mineral that includes sodium, calcium, potassium and other byproducts. Afghanite can often be found in conjunction with other gems such as sodalite, pyrite, diopside and scapolite. While it is commonly used in jewelry items such as pendants, necklaces and earrings, it is not recommended for use in items such as bracelets and rings that get a lot of wear and tear. Due to its relative scarcity, afghanite is most often set into precious metals such as gold and silver. The market price of a 7 x 3.5 x 4.25 cm afghanite specimen is about $45.
