Water Caltrop belongs to the genus Trapa. It is a floating, annual, aquatic plant, growing in slow flowing water up to a depth of 5 meters. It is native to warm temperate parts of Africa and Eurasia. They bear fruits which look like the head of a bull. Each fruit contains a single large starchy seed. It has been cultivated in China and India for around 3000 yrs. The fruits are eaten raw or boiled or are grounded to flour. It is used as a part of Chinese Herbal Medicine to treat fever and drunkenness
