What is Odontophobia? Symptoms, Causes and Treatment for Odontophobia
Odontophobia is a fear of dentists, teeth or receiving dental care. It is very common and leads to what is called dental anxiety. Causes are childhood traumatic experience with dentists or with one’s own teeth due to accidental fall. This phobia can also develop by hearing traumatic dental experiences of others or by listening to negative views about dentistry. Symptoms are feeling of panic, dread, terror, rapid heartbeat, breathlessness, nausea, anxiety attack, dry mouth and trembling. Cognitive behavior therapy aims at helping the people learn to manage their fear about dental treatment. Relaxation techniques focus on breathing and relaxation of muscles. Systemic desensitization involves gradual exposure to dental care and in this way they can gradually overcome their fear.
