What is Jam? Fruit Preserves Ingredients and Uses

Jam is a sticky, sweet form of preserved fruit or berries that most often serves as a condiment or sauce for other dishes. Jam is created by the combination of crushed berries, sugar, and pectin. Jam is distinctive from jelly in that it contains all seeds and fruit skins while jelly has Strawberry jamStrawberry jambeen strained. Pectin is a thickening agent that, when combined with sugar, gives the jam its distinctive texture. Jam makes an excellent accompaniment for bread, pancakes, and other sweet or neutral foods.
