What is Copper II Sulfate Used For? Health Benefits and Side Effects of Copper II Sulfate in Food

Copper ll Sulfate has several significant uses in agriculture including insecticides, fungicides, correction of copper deficiency in soils, inclusion in the feed of animals, as growth stimulants for fattening pigs and chickens and for the eradication of snails and slugs. Other agricultural benefits include prevention of algae on flowering pots, seed dressing, preventing of food rotting used for cattle, and soil sterilization. It is also used as a preservative for wooden boxes, wooden posts and wooden buildings. Health benefits for humans include removal of algae growth from rivers and swimming pools, prevention of the spread of athlete’s foot, prevention of malaria. It is used as an anti-septic and as catalyst in pharmaceutical sector. It is also used in adhesive, electrical and leather industry. Seafood such as oysters, lobsters, crabs and mussels are rich in copper. It is also found in fruits and vegetables such as sweet potatoes, tomatoes, bananas, grapes and dry fruits. Side effects due to copper toxicity include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain. Liver damage, kidney failure and coma are severe side effects.
