What is Aerophobia the Fear of? Symptoms, Causes and Treatment
Aerophobia is the extreme fear of flying or having panic attacks while travelling via airplane. Sometimes the fear is so intense that the person totally avoids air travelling. A person with Aerophobia may also have fear of enclosed spaces, heights and of open places. Fear of flying is often related to past bad experience of aircrafts or a tragic experience of loosing a loved one in aircraft accident. One can also be Aerophobic due to the influence of news about aircraft incidents. Symptoms include fear of being trapped, a knotted feeling in the stomach, sweating, rapid breathing, palpitation, dry mouth and difficulty in swallowing. Treatment is aimed at systemic desensitization. Fear of flying courses are offered at the airports. Some patients also use beta blockers and antidepressants
