The Safe Way to do Diablo 2 Battle.net Item Transfers: Opening Multiple Copies of Diablo 2

Many Diablo 2 players know that there are ways to transfer items between characters on Battle.net. But unless you have a friend to help you, it can be very easy to lose your hard-earned items. There is a solution to this, however, and it is pretty straightforward.
Setting up an item transferSetting up an item transfer
Click Start Menu – Settings – Control Panel – User Accounts – Change the way users log on or off. Turn on Fast User Switching. Make an extra user account that has administrator privileges. Log into that account and install a second copy of Diablo 2. You will need to use a different CD Key number than your original installation; buy a second copy of the game or ask a friend if you can use their key (since you will only be using it for transfering). This is only necessary if you will be doing the transfer on Battle.net.

Open Diablo 2, log onto Battle.net and start a new game with a password. Drop any items you want to transfer on the ground. Do not leave the game. Instead, press Alt-Tab to minimize the game. Click Start – Log Off – Switch Users. Log onto your other user account, open Diablo 2, and log onto Battle.net. You may use characters from the same account, but not two of the same character. Join the game you made before. Wave to your other character and pick up your transferred items.
