How To Become an Astronaut: Education Requirements

A college degree is a must to become an astronaut. After college, a minimum of 3 years of professional experience is also required to become eligible for applying to the position. Astronauts work at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). They can have either a piloting or non-piloting background. However, for both categories there are certain common educational requirements such as a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Their degree can be in engineering, mathematics, biological science, or physical science. The quality of academic preparation is equally important in both types as well as the ability to pass the NASA long-duration space flight test. However, for astronauts with piloting background, at least 1,000 hours pilot-in-command time in jet aircraft is mandatory. Basically it is a degree and experience that gives the eligibility to apply.
