Hi, I have legally purchased a funnel web spider. I bought her from a pet shop in the ACT. So it looks like us canberrans can buy and keep them without any problems. I will also agree that they are deadly, however the funnel web is a very misunderstood creature. But are not as bad as everyone thinks. My girl will run from a fight, but will happily attack if cornered. A female funnel web are one of the best spiders to own, she lives in her burrow and never comes out. She only has to eat a mouse once every two weeks, after which I clean her enclosure. Which many would consider risky but with the proper setup can be completed very safely. But one should not get complacent as there is still a risk of a bite.
